| a) |
The promotion grades of the students shall be calculated as Grade Points Average (G.P.A.) as defined in section 6 (k). |
| b) |
The minimum pass marks for each course shall be 50%. Candidates securing 80% or more marks shall be placed in Grade 'A', 65% to 79.9% in grade 'B' and 50% to 64.9% in grade 'C'. |
| c) |
Candidates obtaining less than 50% marks in any course shall be declared failed in that course. |
| d) |
The grades obtained in the thesis or project work shall not be counted towards the calculation of Grade Point Average. The thesis or project work shall be graded as Excellent, Good, Fair and Fail. |
| e) |
A student shall be required to maintain a minimum of 2.5 G.P.A.. in each semester. |
| f) |
A student failing to maintain a minimum of 2.5 G.P.A.. in any semester shall be placed on probation provided his G.P.A.. is not less than or equal to 1.0. A student placed on probation, shall be: - |

- Allowed to repeat all the courses in which He/She has failed and/or such other courses as recommended by the Head of the Department OR.
- Allowed to repeat on the advice of Head of the Department all or some of the courses in which He/She may have passed during that semester but has failed to maintain a minimum G.P.A of 2.5.
- If the student fails a course marked as compulsory by the concerned department then the student had to repeat the same course, however for failures in optional courses the student can repeat the same or such other courses as recommended by the Head of the Department.

| g) |
A student failing to maintain a G.P.A. of 2.5 at the end of the semester during which he/she was placed on probation shall cease to be a student of PIEAS. However, a student who has been unable to maintain the requisite G.P.A. of 2.5 in the final semester but has passed in all the courses may be declared passed and awarded a pass-grade. |
| h) |
If a student meets the attendance requirements but falls ill within two weeks prior to or during semester examination and is unable to sit in the examination he/she shall be allowed to drop the course(s) and shall not be considered as having failed in that/those course(s). The student shall take up that course when next offered by the Department. This concession shall only be available to the students whose genuineness of illness is confirmed by a committee comprising of the Head of the concerned department, Medical officer and teacher(s) concerned appointed by the Rector. |
| i) |
The cases of prolonged illness and female students relating to dropping the semester on account of maternity, shall also be referred to the above committee appointed by the Rector for this purpose. The recommendations of the committee if approved by the Rector shall be final. If the dropping of the semester is approved by the Rector then the student shall be allowed to drop the course(s) and shall not be considered as having failed in that/those course(s). The student shall take up that course when next offered by the Department. |
| j) |
On successful completion of the requirements of the above mentioned postgraduate degrees, each candidate shall be awarded the respective degree. A separate Transcript shall however be issued to each candidate showing the percentage of marks and grades obtained in each course including that of the thesis or project work. The grades of thesis or project work shall not be counted towards the calculation of the G.P.A. |
| k) |
The following formulae shall be used to calculate the Grade Point from the marks obtained: - |
Grade Point = 0 for marks < 50%
Grade Point = (2.0 + (marks obtained - 50)/15)) for marks >=50% and marks <=95
Grade Point = 5.0 for marks > 95%

| Note:- |
- In Grade Points (G.P.) third fraction and higher will be ignored
- In G.P. if the second fraction after decimal is 4 or less, it will be ignored. However, if the second fraction is 5 or more, it will be taken into account by raising the first fraction to the next higher digit. (e.g. 2.41 through 2.44 will be considered as 2.4 while 2.45 through 2.49 will be raised to 2.5.
- The G.P. for 'A' shall be from 4.0 to 5.0 for 'B' 3.0 to 3.9, for 'C' 2.0 to 2.9 and for 'F' zero.

| l) |
Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) shall be calculated in accordance with the following formula: -
GPA = sum (credits in a course x corresponding grade points)/Total Credits

| m) |
The controller of Examination shall issue a Certificate of Merit to a student in the respective degree on the basis of the overall result provided that the student has obtained on the aggregate a grade point average of 4 or above, has not failed in, or repeated any course, and does not have any discontinuity in his study for the relevant degree. The recipient for the award of the Certificate of merit would also be awarded the following appropriate medals if He/She also stands first in his class
- Dr. I H. Usmani gold medal shall be awarded for the M.Sc. Nuclear Engineering.
- Mr. Munir Ahmed Khan gold medal shall be awarded for M.Sc. Systems Engineering.
- Any other medal as approved by the BOG for the respective degree course.

| n) |
The controller of Examination shall issue a Certificate of Appreciation to three students whose thesis is recommended as excellent by a committee constituted by the Head of the Department comprising three faculty members of that department not including the supervisor of that thesis or project. In addition to this recommendation the student must also have a minimum overall G.P.A. of 3.0. |
| o) |
Any of the above mentioned rules may be cancelled or modified or new rules may be added with the approval of the Board of Faculties. |
| p) |
A committee constituting of the following members will be asked for the interpretation of any rule(s) if needed:
- Pro-Rector, PIEAS
- Deans of Faculties
- Concerned Head of Department
- Head R&E (Ex-Officio member)
