The Objective and Thrust of the Department

Major objective of all courses and programs in the Department of Physics and Applied Mathematics (DPAM) is to develop in the student the modes of thought and scientific methods related to various branches of Physics, together with the essential skills of learning and of communication.

The department aims at training students in the multi-discipline spirit of PIEAS by involving them in wide range of experimental and theoretical studies and at a sufficient depth to develop their intellectual and personal capabilities.

Currently main research and education thrust of the department is in following areas:

Medical Physics, Neutron Dosimetry Radiation Physics

Lasers, Quantum Optics & Applied Electronics

Computational Physics

Reactor Physics

These areas will grow and diversify as the faculty and students evolve the department.

Main training thrust will be to provide education in scientific methods of thoughts as detailed as possible through experimental and computational training in Physics and its relation to Technology and Engineering in all courses offered at the Department.

M.Sc. Medical Physics
It is a Two years teaching and research program with one year of course work and one year of clinical training and thesis project. During first year three modules are devoted to course work. Each module has at least four courses of total 12 credit hours.

One year Clinical attachment and thesis project is carried out after successful completion of the course work. This work includes practical training in hospitals and original research and or review of already done research work. Student have to write thesis report at the end of the project and defend it in open presentation.

M.Phil Physics (planned)
It will be a Two years teaching and research program with five semesters. Two semesters will be devoted to course work. Each semester will have four courses of total 12 credit hours. Then remaining semesters will be devoted to thesis research work, final defense and a final oral examination. Area of specialization include

  1. Computational Physics
  2. Lasers Physics
  3. Plasma Physics
  4. Radiation Physics
