The Academic Programmes

Department of Medical Sciences is offering following academic programmes.

MS Nuclear Medicine
The MS Nuclear Medicine programme was initiated at PIEAS in 1988. This programme has been recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) as a post-graduate qualification equivalent to an 'Intermediate Diploma'. Examples of other qualifications recognized by PMDC at this level are: DMRT and MCPS.(Radiotherapy).

The Quaid-i-Azam University recognizes it as being equivalent to an M.Phil. Degree for the purpose of registration in the subsequent Ph.D. programme, which has also been initiated at PIEAS now. Because of the very close association of several of the leading international experts in the field with the design and implementation of the MS (Nuclear Medicine) programme, it has had a high degree of visibility and acceptance in the international academic domain. This has been further reinforced in recent years by the work of some of our graduates who are now engaged in Ph.D. studies in several institutions around the world. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recognizing the high academic standards of this programme has included it amongst those that it actively sponsors in the form of allocation of Fellowships for attending it.

The duration of the programme is approximately two years and it is divided into two major segments of one year each. The first year is devoted primarily to course work at PIEAS, while during the second year; fellows are attached to various Nuclear Medicine Centres in Pakistan for clinical training and work on research projects.

MS Radiation & Medical Oncology
This is a new upcoming MS programme expected to start in October 2008. the main objective of this programme is to train doctors in proper management and treatment of cancer patients and cancer related complications. It is a 61 credit-hours course with 31 credit-hours of course work and 30 credit-hours of clinical training and research.

Ph.D. Nuclear Medicine
