It is very satisfying to learn that after being accorded degree-awarding status, the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS), is moving swiftly towards the implementation of its new programmes. The development of this institution vividly symbolises the close linkage between science & technology for national development and strong educational programmes on which all development ultimately depends.

Our government is fully committed to the creation of conditions in which education can flourish in the country. We are very conscious of the fact that in the modern world, human resource development is the most powerful vehicle for promoting the economic uplift of the nation. It is encouraging to see that an organisation like PAEC, which has played such a commendable role in many vital facets of the life of this nation, has been very active on the educational front as well. Its nurturing of this Institute over several decades has been yet another manifestation of its wise policy of ensuring self-reliance.

I am sure that through the greater autonomy that it has now acquired, PIEAS will be able to further increase its contribution to the scientific and technological development of the nation by conducting educational and research programmes of the highest quality in a wide variety of academic disciplines. In the future we will expect to see it establishing its place amongst the renowned centres of learning, not just nationally, but on the international level.
